Rendering and more
Three dimensional objects and structures and the way light affects them has always interested me. Over the years, I have moved fluidly between graphics, designing and building real three-dimensional objects, creating virtual 3d models and animations, and illustration. Most of the illustration work has focused in one way or another on representing dimensionality and for many years Photoshop has been my primary medium. That work includes architectural rendering, designing and mocking up displays, stage sets, advertising illustration, photo-retouching, packaging, logos, and map covers (combining rendering and photography). My approach to Photoshop has been greatly influenced by my strong drawing, painting, and sculpting skills. Those skills as well as my computer experience have allowed me to feel very comfortable working in both the 2-D and the 3-D worlds, real or virtual.
As a renderer, my role has been that of a facilitator; helping architects and other designers visualize their ideas and refine their designs in the process. Sometimes I'm involved from the very beginning, or working from the barest of 3D rendered models to allow the architect to focus on the design rather than sinking their time into building details or battling textures. Other times I've been asked to come in at the end and fix up, retouch, or relight other artists' renderings. Some clients have had me specialize in more finished renderings for use in the press.
